Nothing Like the Sun – Lancaster University

Gavin Friday will be joining the Gavin Bryars Ensemble for a performance of Nothing Like the Sun (The Shakespeare Sonnets) at Lancaster University (UK) at 7.30pm on November 26, 2009.

Gavin Bryars, beautiful through-composed score weaves together eight of Shakespeare’s sonnets on the subjects of time, memory and music. It features five sonnet settings by guest composers including Antony Heggarty (Antony and the Johnsons) and Mira Calix. With Anna Maria Friman, John Potter and Gavin Friday.

    I concur with previous speaker. Where is the “wishlist” for this? (Almost X-mas remember!) I understand this production was partly commissioned by Opera North – hence the somewhat obscure (?) locality (well, if us non-British Island residents have to Google it for geographical whereabout, then… : )).

    Nothing Like the Sun has previously been performed in Stratford, Leeds, Nottingham, Newcastle, London and Gent (Belgium). Another spoken word performance with Gavin Bryars and the Crash Ensemble happened in Dublin in 2005.

    Oh my bad Caroline! Times two…
    From what I´ve seen Gavin gets rave reviews for his spoken word-performances – he is so excellent at narrating (just see/hear Peter and the Wolf and the celebration for Oscar Wilde for instance – Gavin is doing a top notch delivery.) I´m clearly in the wrong part of Europe!

    I think one of the OLD Ivy’s need to have this troupe come and give some real culture to the pop shite now being flooded in the masses,AND their minds! …yes, back in the ussa, TUNE OUT KIDS, TURN OFF…..DROP IN!! Friday is a man in a million…really Gavin, come back for some art fuck, be it Spoken Word, Sonnets, Song, or a lecture on the history as a VP, the wonderful world of angles in demoms bodies…Paranormal energy would be of interest too….whateve!!
