Herbie Macken

Niall “Herbie” Macken is a musician from Cork, Ireland who has been playing and recording music with a wide range of people from all corners of the world of music. He played keyboards with the Devlins and ended up making an album at Daniel Lanois’ studio in New Orleans with producer Malcolm Burn from whom he learnt a lot about making records.

Herbie became involved in Sulan Studios in West Cork where he worked on records by Peardar O Riarda, Micheall O Suillebhann, Frank and Walters, Emotional Fish and Kieran Kennedy. He has toured and recorded with Crowded House’s Nick Seymour and Neil Finn.

It was while working with Malcolm Burn that he got to know Gavin Friday and started writing music with him. Their first composition together was the score for Pat McCabe’s play The Revenant (2007) after which they started working on material for what was to become Gavin’s fourth solo album, ‘catholic’.
