Gavin Friday records Big Star’s Kangaroo

Gavin Friday has recorded vocals for the song “Kangaroo” by Big Star (Alex Chilton) on the compilation album “Why hast Thou forsaken me” by Universal Daughters.

The band Universal Daughters, put together for the project, includes among others Mike Patton’s guitarist Alessandro “Asso” Stefana, Mamuthones’ drummer Maurizio Boldrin and members of Verdena (one of Italy’s most notorious rock groups). The album was produced by Marco Fasolo of Jennifer Gentle (Sub Pop Records), assisted by French multi-instrumentalist Jean-Charles Carbone.

A tribute to mostly Anglo-American songs from the 20’s to the 70’s, the album a fund-raiser for Città della Speranza, an organisation that aides sick children.

Other vocalists on the album are Jarvis Cocker, Chris Robinson (Black Crowes) Alan Vega (Suicide), Jerry “Swamp Dogg” Williams, Lisa Germano, Baby Dee, Steve Wynn (Dream Syndicate), Mick Collins (The Dirtbombs), Stan Ridgway (Wall of Voodoo) and Mark Arm (Mudhoney).

‘Why hast Thou forsaken me’ is out on Santeria in Italy on April 19th and on Rough Trade records in the UK and Europe in September.

Gavin Friday and Republic of Loose play Inspirations Gig

Gavin Friday will team up with Republic of Loose for the fifth Barretstown Inspirations gig which will take place on Thursday April 11, 2013, 7.30pm at The Olympia Theatre in Dublin. Other acts on the bill include The Coronas, Lisa Hannigan, The Strypes, The Walls, The Frank & Walters and Maud in Cahoots.

Tickets priced €33 including booking fee are available via Ticketmaster with all proceeds going directly to the Barretstown charity.

The gig will be hosted by Ian Dempsey and all the acts will perform songs by their musical heroes along with some of their own material.

Doors open at 7pm.

Gavin Friday scores Blood Rising Documentary

Blood Rising, the documentary film featuring artist Brian Maguire, directed by Mark McLoughlin and scored by Gavin Friday premiered at the Savoy Cinema Dublin, the closing weekend of the Jameson Dublin Film Festival, on Sunday 24 February.

The original score for Blood Rising was written, arranged and produced by Gavin Friday, performed by Kate Ellis (cello) and Robson Rocha (guitars) and mixed by Michael Heffernan.

Irish President Michael D. Higgins and the cast as well as Mexican human rights defender Elia Escobedo Garcia from the film ‘Blood Rising’ attended the screening of the documentary which follows Irish artist Brian Maguire’s work with femicide victims in Mexico.

Gavin Friday’s entry for the Big Egg Hunt 2013

The Big Egg Hunt 2013 is interactive public art display of 100 uniquely crafted eggs designed by Irish artists and celebrities. The eggs are placed in key locations in Dublin from the 12th February to the 15th March after which they will be brought to one central location and displayed for one week.

All eggs are on auction, with all the proceeds benefiting Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation.

Hal Willner’s Son of Rogue’s Gallery features Gavin Friday

Gavin Friday sings “Tom’s Gone to Hilo” with Shannon McNally on Son of Rogue’s Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs & Chanteys. Produced by Hal Willner, the double album will be released February 19 on Anti-Records.

Executive produced by Johnny Depp and Gore Verbinski, the compilation two-disc recording of sea shanties also features Tom Waits, Michael Gira, Marc Almond, Mary Margaret O’Hara, Keith Richards, Courtney Love, Michael Stipe, Iggy Pop, Nick Cave, Macy Gray, Patti Smith, and many more.

The album is a follow up to Willner’s 2006 production, Rogue’s Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys.

Gavin Friday’s performance of Shakespeare’s Sonnet 40 with Kate Ellis and Kaleidoscope, recorded last week, will be broadcast tonight on RTE Radio 1 at 10pm GMT. You will be able to listen to it on the RTE website.

Gavin Friday teams up with Kate Ellis and Kaleidoscope for a special recording of the RTE radio show ‘Arts Tonight‘ with a live studio audience.

The recording will take place at 8pm on Thursday 29 November in the RTÉ Radio Centre and will last about an hour. There’ll be music by Linda Buckley, Astor Piazzolla, Sofia Gubaidulina, Gavin Bryars and Jacques Brel, performed by Kate Ellis, Cliodhna Ryan and Gavin Friday.

Audience places are free, but must be reserved. If you would like to come along, please email artstonightevents@rte.ie, including your phone number. RTE will be in touch with you to confirm your place.

Gavin Friday and John Kelly celebrate a A Capital Idea

Gavin Friday is a guest on John Kelly’s A Capital Idea, a special event at the Dublin’s Theatre Festival this year. Friday and Kelly will be joined by Camille O’Sullivan for an intimate and informal evening of music, conversation and song, celebrating Ireland’s capital city, its cultural achievements and its unique character. A Capital Idea will take place at the Odessa Club on October 10th.

Tickets are €15 and can be booked online from the Dublin Theatre Festival website.

Gavin Friday confirmed for Soundedit 2012 in Lódź, Poland

Gavin Friday will be playing this year’s “Soundedit”, the International Festival of Music Producers and Sound Engineers, in Lódź, Poland.

The show is scheduled at Klub Wytwórnia at on October 27th, at 7pm.

Gavin will also be presenting Bomb the Bass’ Tim Simenon with the festival’s award for the production of Gavin’s 1995 album ‘Shag Tobacco’.

Other guests featured at the festival include: Youth (Martin Glover), Tim Simenon, David J and Alan Wilder.
