We had a little chat with Gavin about ‘Hal Willner presents: An Evening with Gavin Friday and Friends‘.

C: How are you?

G: I am in excellent Physical and Emotional Health… and How are you?

C: I’m doing well, Gav, thanks. ‘An evening with Gavin Friday and friends’… what’s the occasion?

G: A Hal Willner Presents Event which always proves to be an Extraordinary Affair… The Occasion? A few days before i turn 50 years of age….Hal and My Good Friends all coming together to perform around the world of Mr. Friday… The Evening is also a Charity Event for RED.

C: What do you usually do on your birthday?

G: Preferably I’d Hide…. but usually I am very happy to have a quiet bite to eat with a few close friends.

C: Your 50th will be a little different then. Why Carnegie Hall?

G: The most beautiful looking, best sounding Venue in one of the Greatest cities on Earth… to play Carnegie Hall is a dream come true….

C: What are the guests going to do on the night?

G: That’s a secret… xx

G: Joel Grey is as you say a living Legend.. He has been a touchstone to me as a performer since i was a teenager…. He and his performance in ‘Cabaret’ for me was the key to the door ….. it was my introduction to Brecht, Weill, Lotte Lenya… it opened a very inspiring can of worms…

C: Gavin Friday live on stage… what’s he like?

G: How would I know I’ve never seen him ‘Live’?? … but am very much looking forward to the Show

C: What’s with the boxer dog?

G: His name is ‘GAV’… He looks full on but he doesn’t bite.

Gavin will be joining Republic of Loose on stage in Dublin on the 23rd of December (today). The band are set to play The Academy two times, with an all ages show at 2pm and an evening show at 8pm. At this point we are unsure whether Gavin will appear at both. Tickets are only available for the afternoon performance.

The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World, Ian Wilson’s work for narrator, clarinet, piano, violin and cello, based on a text by Gabriel García Márquez, which was first performed in Dublin (2007) and Brighton (2008) will see its European premiere at the Irish Cultural Centre in Paris on December 9.
Narrator Gavin Friday will reprise his role alongside pianist Finghin Collins, clarinettist Carol McGonnell and will be joined by Catherine Leonard on violin and Richard Harwood on cello.

Gavin Friday will be a guest at Duke Special’s show at the National Concert Hall in Dublin this Friday. The Northern Irish singer (bio) is performing with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and has invited Gavin to join him on stage for the Kurt Weill song Apple Jack.
National Concert Hall, Friday 22 August, 8pm.

Londonist reviews the 4-hour Rogue’s Gallery show in London on July 28th, 2008

Other fixtures were Ed Harcourt and Gavin Friday. Harcourt’s heartbreaking “Farewell Nancy” sounded less mournful with the Langley Sisters leading the vocals. Friday gave an inspired performance of “Baltimore Whores,” perhaps the first truly exciting performance of the evening. The pair shared vocal duties on “Boney Was A Warrior” with a visibly unsteady Shane McGowan on harmonica and were joined by Baby Gramps in backing Sandy Dillon on “Bully In The Alley,” which was all too perfectly suited to Dillon’s cat-scratch vocals.

As Wilner said, you couldn’t get through an evening of sea chanteys without the obligatory rendition of “What Do We Do With A Drunken Sailor.” In the hands of David Thomas, Keith Moline, the still-shaky McGowan, and Gavin Friday, it took on an apocalyptic nature. Despite a light-hearted reference to the accordion on his knee, Thomas succeeded only in making perhaps the best known of sea songs borderline terrifying. However, if a song has been covered to death then it might as well scare you near to death.

“A smattering of highlights (there were too many to mention) would be the aforementioned Oscar winner, Mr Robbins taking the lead mic for My Son John, Sandy Dillon (whose voice suggests a Macy Gray/Steve Tyler parentage) pleading Leave Her Johnny and Gavin Friday giving the Baltimore Whores food for thought.”
