Rogue’s Gallery – Baltimore Whores – Lyrics

There were four old whores from Baltimore
Drinking the blood red wine
And all the conversation was
“Yours is smaller than mine.”

Chorus:
Through me roly, poly, tickle my hole-y,
Smell of my slimy slough,
and drag your nuts across me guts,
I’m one of the whorey crew.

“You’re a liar,” said the first whore,
“Mine’s as big as the air
The birds fly in, the birds fly out,
And never touch a hair.”

Chorus

“You’re a liar.” said the second,
“Mine’s as big as the sea
The ship sails in, the ship sails out
Never troubles me.”

Chorus

“You’re a liar,” said the third whore,
“Mine’s as big as the moon,
the men jump in, the men jump out,
Never touch the womb.”

Chorus

Swab your decks, me hearties
Slice them up with pride
Light your oars, you sons of whores
Yours is smaller than mine

“You’re a liar,” said the last whore,
“Mine’s the biggest of all,
the fleet sailed in on the first of June,
and didn’t come back till Fall.”

Chorus

‘If Stanley Kubrick would be making albums…’

Gavin talks with Vincent Woods of RTE’s The Arts Show about the Rogue’s Gallery shows and his 20-year working relationship with show director Hal Willner (known for his tributes shows to Nino Rota, Kurt Weill and producer of Lian Lunson’s documentary Leonard Cohen – I’m Your Man). It’s a nice little interview interspersed with songs from the Rogue’s Gallery CDs and the Hal Willner produced Apologia from the album Each Man Kills The Thing He Loves, which Gavin recorded with Maurice Seezer in New York in July 1988.

Rum, sodomy and the lash at The Barbican

A capacity crowd enjoyed Hal Willner’s epic 4-hour Rogue’s Gallery at the Barbican in London on Monday night. Gavin sang ‘Baltimore Whores’ and ‘Pinery Boy’ and provided backing vocals on ‘Bully in the Alley’, ‘Boney was a Warrior’ and an improvised ‘What Shall We Do With the Drunken Sailor’ together with David Thomas (Pere Ubu), Keith Moline and Shane McGowan. ‘Friday gave an inspired performance’

Londonist reviews the 4-hour Rogue’s Gallery show in London on July 28th, 2008

Other fixtures were Ed Harcourt and Gavin Friday. Harcourt’s heartbreaking “Farewell Nancy” sounded less mournful with the Langley Sisters leading the vocals. Friday gave an inspired performance of “Baltimore Whores,” perhaps the first truly exciting performance of the evening. The pair shared vocal duties on “Boney Was A Warrior” with a visibly unsteady Shane McGowan on harmonica and were joined by Baby Gramps in backing Sandy Dillon on “Bully In The Alley,” which was all too perfectly suited to Dillon’s cat-scratch vocals.

As Wilner said, you couldn’t get through an evening of sea chanteys without the obligatory rendition of “What Do We Do With A Drunken Sailor.” In the hands of David Thomas, Keith Moline, the still-shaky McGowan, and Gavin Friday, it took on an apocalyptic nature. Despite a light-hearted reference to the accordion on his knee, Thomas succeeded only in making perhaps the best known of sea songs borderline terrifying. However, if a song has been covered to death then it might as well scare you near to death.

Rogue’s Gallery: A smattering of highlights

JournalOnline.co.uk reviews Rogue’s Gallery in Gateshead:

“A smattering of highlights (there were too many to mention) would be the aforementioned Oscar winner, Mr Robbins taking the lead mic for My Son John, Sandy Dillon (whose voice suggests a Macy Gray/Steve Tyler parentage) pleading Leave Her Johnny and Gavin Friday giving the Baltimore Whores food for thought.”
